The Capitol Chordsmen Chorus is the largest (and growing) A Cappella Men’s Chorus in Madison, Wisconsin. While we are a longstanding part of the Madison-area’s musical history, with our origins tracing back to 1945, we are working to make the chorus a live and vibrant part of its the city’s present.
Capitol Chordsmen is a chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, the premier a cappella musical organization in the world. Our 24 members include former college a cappella singers, musicians, and guys who simply enjoy raising their voices in song. Members and regular visitors range from undergraduates to retired.
We primarily sing and compete in the barbershop close-harmony style of singing, but our repetoire also draws from jazz, broadway, and original compositions.
Capitol Chordsmen is always accepting new members. Guests are welcome to visit any rehearsal and our auditions are ongoing. Prospective new members should be performers with a desire to work hard to make solid music. We rehearse most Tuesday evenings from 7-9:30; please see our online calendar for a list of our upcoming rehearsals. Rehearsals in a in a laid back but focused atmosphere, and include sectional rehearsals, tag-learning, quartet singing, and nuanced full-chorus work through the repetoire. Afterwards, a smaller contingent of the chorus can typically be found belting out a few more tags in a nearby tavern over some Spotted Cow until later in the evening.
One thing that makes the Chordmen special is that membership in Capitol Chordsmen is not limited to choral singing. We actively foster the development of quartets, small performance groups, and soloists who perform as featured members of the chorus, as well as booking gigs on their own throughout the city. We also employ coaches and host master classes from some of the best regarded a cappella performers in the country. Both the chorus and individual quartets have the annual opportunity to compete at the District, Regional, and International Levels.
In the year ahead, the Capitol Chordsmen will be performing a Fall concert along with several charity and outreach events, national anthems at local sporting events, and fund-raising activities such as Singing Valentines. Quartets can regularly be found performing at local venues or singing in the streets of Madison at events such Bratfest and the Farmers Market.
The continued work of the Capitol Chordsmen Chorus depends largely on the generosity of those who appreciate the art that we create. If you are unable to become a member, please consider supporting us by making a tax-deductible donation, or purchasing a ticket to any CCC show or fundraiser.
